Join the master of paper folding, Kate Colin, for a satisfying and mesmerising day of transforming simple sheets of paper into intricately folded masterpieces. In our first ever Paper Folding workshop you will be expertly guided by Kate as you explore the hidden potential for transforming flat sheets of paper into impressive sculptural geometric forms using just a few simple folds. During the day you will explore several techniques, patterns and structures including division, spirals, flat pleats and herringbone tessellations. You’ll leave with a collection of pleasingly functional products as well as a variety of inspiring techniques and designs with which you can continue to experiment at home. Using your new found skills you will be able to make your own pieces to gift or keep, or apply to your creative practice to take it in new and exciting directions. To get you inspired we’ll talk a bit about the history of paper folding, and how folding is used in fashion, architecture and contemporary design. All tools and a range of high-quality pre-cut papers will be provided. Suitable for complete beginners and seasoned crafters alike.
Your Tutor
Kate Colin is a paper folding artist and designer based in Glasgow who creates bold and sculptural lighting and homewares. Inspired by origami and geometric form, her range of handcrafted folded products emphasise the interplay between light and shade. Founded in 2014, her studio manufactures products for both residential interiors and commercial clients. All work is produced in small limited edition quantities and made entirely by hand using traditional folding and fabric pleating techniques. Kate’s appreciation for the beauty and variety of geometric form was inherited from her mathematician father who made polyhedral models in his spare time. Many years later, she decided to channel this latent interest in colour, tonal variations and geometry to create a range of functional homeware products. Having received several awards and scholarships, she is continually striving to increase her knowledge of the art of folding and origami, learn new techniques and experiment with ways of applying her designs to new materials to create a variety of innovative, functional products. She has studied with leading paper folders including Paul Jackson, Dario Zeruto, and Richard Sweeney, Yuko Nishimura and Miro Burman.
