Spend a day making something beautiful and useful using traditional fabric coiling techniques, transforming rope and fabric into a sculptural basket or bowl for your home. We’ll spend the day wrapping and stitching as we gradually build up our vessels, experimenting with colour, shape and scale as we go.
We’ll use salvaged ropes, scrap fabrics and old clothing, giving textiles that might otherwise be discarded a new life. You can curate your own colour palette, from subtle, tonal combinations to bright contrasting hues, and learn how to control the width and angle of the walls to create your choice of bowl or basket. The finished vessel could be used to store craft materials, household objects, or even to collect scraps for your next project.
The technique is wonderfully versatile. While we’ll concentrate on making domestic-scale vessels during the workshop, once you’ve mastered the process you can take it further at home, creating larger and more ambitious pieces such as rugs and wall hangings.
Re-use and upcycling are an important part of our approach to craft, and this workshop offers a practical way to make beautiful new objects from materials that already exist. Please bring along any old garments or scrap textiles you’d like to incorporate. If you happen to be a climber, retired climbing rope is another great material to experiment with.
No previous sewing or weaving experience is necessary.
About Your Tutor
Eilidh Weir is an artist and designer who is best know as the founder of sustainable fashion brand All That Is Braw. Eilidh’s holistic approach to sustainable fashion starts with careful sourcing of her materials, which are sewn in house, by hand, right here in Central Scotland, and even mended and altered as required by Eilidh’s own fair hand. Taking a zero waste approach, she saves all the scraps from her successful garment making cottage industry, and uses them to create beautiful textile artworks that champion sustainability, inclusivity, and understanding across a broad range of issues including mental health awareness and support for the LGBTQ+ community. Â She is passionate about mending and reducing textile waste and is keen to share these skills far and wide.
- All tools are provided for use at the upcycled fabric baskets workshop and materials are included in the course cost. You are encouraged to bring along your own clothes textiles and threads to incorporate into your project if you would like to
- Tea and coffee are provided but participants should bring their own lunch and utensils
- All of our classes are suitable for over 16s, younger crafters may be accommodated if accompanied by a participating adult but please contact us before booking
