Designed for beginners and experienced makers alike, this inspiring hands-on experience introduces the essential techniques, tools, and creative approaches behind the art of intricate paper cutting. Working with Emily’s expert guidance, you’ll explore hand cutting techniques, draw inspiration from thoughtfully designed templates, and develop your own distinctive paper cut artwork in a relaxed, supportive setting. In an age of digitally produced designs, hand-cut paper illustrations offer something uniquely expressive. Every cut reflects the maker’s touch, resulting in a one-off artwork with a warmth, character, and individuality. You’ll learn how to create intricate, one-of-a-kind pieces that celebrate the beauty of handcrafted work and express your own creative style.

More than simply creating a finished piece on the day, you’ll gain a new creative skillset to take into your own practice. Whether you choose to craft elegant handmade gifts, create intricate artworks to frame and display in your home, or combine paper cutting with illustration, printmaking, embroidery, or other creative disciplines, you’ll leave with the confidence and knowledge to continue exploring this timeless craft long after the workshop has ended.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll take home your finished paper cut artwork, along with a selection of templates and the skills and confidence to continue your paper cutting journey at home. Your cutting knife and mat will be yours to take home at the end of the workshop, meaning that you can immerse yourself in creating a new artwork as soon as the workshop is over.

About Your Tutor

Emily Hogarth is a freelance illustrator and paper cut artist who strives to capture the magical in the everyday. Working from her studio just outside Edinburgh, she creates intricate paper-cuts and illustrations. Her designs are unique and bold, yet retain a fresh and delicate beauty. Her work ranges from personalised paper cut commissions to large scale commercial design. Recent clients and projects include Edinburgh Sick Kids Hospital, Hidden Scotland Magazine, Tomatin Distillery, and the National Museum of Scotland.

All tools are provided for use at the upcycled mosaic workshop and materials are included in the course cost. You are welcome to bring your own materials to incorporate such as broken china, glass beads and small found objects. We can advise on the suitability of your finds for mosaic use.
Tea and coffee are provided but participants should bring their own lunch and utensils
All of our classes are suitable for over 16s, younger crafters may be accommodated if accompanied by a participating adult but please contact us before booking
