Japanese Stab Bookbinding
Tues 3 Dec
10am – 4pm

Join us for a skill packed day with Cassandra Baron, learning her special contemporary and sustainable take on the ancient craft of Japanese Stab Bookbinding. Japanese stab binding is a most satisfying way of binding single sheets of paper together, characterised by an exposed spine with stitch patterns that range from simple to intricate and down right mind boggling! In this class Cass shares her upcycled take on three of her favourite Japanese stab stitches.

Create a hardcover hinged book with an intricate hemp leaf Japanese stab stitch, incorporating remnant material into the cove, decorative inner pages and pockets, with a nifty page divider. In class, you will create a landscape book roughly 26.5 x 10.5cm but Cass will share how to scale up and down should you want to create the same style of book in different shapes and sizes at home. You will also have the opportunity to try some simpler Japanese Stab stitches and create a set of paperback notebooks.

Leave the workshop with a collection of books, new skills and follow up video instructions that you can refer to for a reminder of what is covered in class. You will leave the workshop with a finished book as well as the skills and confidence to carry on bookbinding at home. After the workshop we will send on links to Cass’s video tutorials to help you on your binding journey. And if you’re hooked on books (you will be) Cass will have kits available to purchase for £12 at the end of the workshop.

All materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring along any of your own decorative papers to include in your book. This class comes with access to comprehensive video instructions should you want to make more books at home (they make great gifts).

About Your Tutor

“I have a background in Fine Art Sculpture, which is were I first discovered bookbinding – making my own sketchbooks out of whatever was to hand so I could get the sculptures I wanted to make out of my head, onto paper and into the world. Driven by a desire to help people explore their own creativity I went on to complete a Masters in Art Museum & Gallery Education, which led to me working as an Art Educator at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Artist in Residence at the Girvan Lantern Festival and taking on the role of Development Officer with Voluntary Arts Scotland, supporting community groups of all shapes and sizes to develop and deliver creative activities – all the while teaching myself bookbinding and running bookbinding workshops. In January 2019 I took the leap and went fully freelance and set up Bookbinding with Cass, which enabled me to put together a dynamic programme of creative classes and work in partnership with some fantastic community organisations, sharing my love of bookbinding with people from a range of backgrounds.”
