10am – 4pm
Join embroidery artist Jessica Grady for a colourful and experimental day long creative recycled embellishments workshop as part of Dunblane Ecofest 2025. This sustainability focussed workshop explores upcycling everyday materials, combined with mixed media materials and hand stitch. You will begin the day creating a small technique sampler, in which you can try out all the different materials and techniques that Jessica will demonstrate, including 2D and 3D embellishment ideas. Jessica will show you how you can utlise a range of mixed media materials to create your technique sampler including recycled plastic sequins, painted washers, electric cable sleeve and dyed sponges and tubing, as well as more traditional beads, buttons and embellishments. After your technique sampler is complete, you will start to create a more developed artwork, utlising the embellishment techniques that you enjoyed from your sampler. Jessica will help you with ideas for your design, whether you want to create a textile art piece inspired by fantasy floral blooms or abstract shapes and doodles. Jessica will also go through her tips and tricks for design composition, deciding on colour palettes and building your embellishments to add height, intricacy and detail.
Techniques explored within the workshop include: folded and pleated sequins, fused recycled plastic shapes, vertical beads, looped beaded bridges, textured tassels and stacked sequins. Jessica will provide all materials, and will bring along lots of her recycled and unique embellished treasures for you to try out, including her die-cutter for creating your own sequins and shapes. This workshop is suitable for all abilities, whether you are a complete beginner to stitch, or someone who would like to explore techniques and try something new! You will leave the workshop with two textile samples for inspiring your future creations, or that you can frame up as textile artworks. All materials for the class are included.
